Highgate Meadow, 2023

A small patch of land measuring 25m X25 m was rewilded with native grasses in 2012.. Over the years the meadow has matured. Grasshoppers, crickets and other insects have arrived and given rise to a new sonic experience. Thanks to help from @ soundtent I was able to stream the sounds of insects live online via the "locus stream" project. Highgate woods is located near a busy traffic intersection and below a flight path. The meadow is also adjacent to a children's playground.
Listening to these small insect voices found in a location due to rewilding contrasts with some of the sounds of traffic and planes.
The stream was played live into the Highgate cafe via wireless bluetooth speakers.
Garden Chat, 2023
Big shout out to:
www.shortwavecollective.net/resources.html both for their generosity and guidance in sharing how to make an open wave receiver. This was an experiment and I was thrilled that it worked! When I stepped into the back garden I could hear the birds, then with the aid of an open wave receiver I was able to receive radio wave signals which enabled me to listen to various radio channels which was exciting.
Greenwich Time, 2023
This recordings in this piece were made using directional, contact and hydrophone microphones. Handling of the microphones often leads to what I call 'interference noise', in this piece I have not edited out all this noise, perhaps making my presence all the more audible.
Snow walk, Highgate woods
recorded on iPhone.
2023
Wailsong, 2022
This piece is a lament on the damage plastic is causing to our wild life in the oceans.
Yellow Sheshed, 2022
This sound piece is a nod to having my own space to work.
Balliniska, 2022
My father worked on this farm when I was a child. The farm is derelict now. I recently visited this farm and did some recording.. I often helped out on the farm, one of my jobs being to open and close the doors when livestock were being fed.
Building as body, 2022
The sounds in this piece are taken from the pipes, radiators, valves of a building. I imagined the building as a body. Many but not all of these sounds are inaudible just like the sounds of the body.
Meditation on rain, 2022
This is a recording of rain using a contact microphone and a directional microphone. A contact microphone in this case senses the vibrations in an object when the raindrops touch it.
Tidal Volume, 2022
Tidal volume is the amount of air that passes into and out of the lungs in a full respiratory cycle. I imagine the building as a body. The building has its own inherent sounds. The people that come into and out of the building on a daily basis I imagine as the oxygen both giving life and purpose to the building. Many sounds are recorded in the building that can only be activated by human presence. An example is the sound of footsteps, the material that comprises the floor makes a sound on contact with shoes and movement.
Plough, 2015,
In this performance I am pulling extruded letters that make up the words 'care' and 'share'.
A tension set in, 2015
A tension set in was a six speaker installion sound work in a stairwell. A stairwell is an in between space where in general people do not linger. The sound piece title is a play on 'Attention set in' exploring the idea of experiencing presence in between thoughts.
